Rocket League® Review
Rocket League is the game where Mario Kart Battle Mode meets soccer. It features exciting and challenging matches with a variety of top-notch rocket-powered vehicles instead of human soccer players. In this crazy concept, you may find a dumb fun in pulling turbocharge-assisted front flips in an ice cream truck and work with your team to control the giant ball on offense and defense.
Get ready to perform aerial goals and pull-off breathtaking saves.
Graphics — 4.5/5
The game looks fantastic, right down to every blade of grass and the sunlight shining through the walls of the arena. All the vehicles have amazing design, with huge spoilers, flaming rocket engines, and overall aggressive appearance.
The music is the exact type of cheesy techno you would expect from future sports simulator and the crowd on the stadium cheers and groans when shots are scored or saved.
Gameplay — 5/5
Rocket League doesn’t really need much of explanation. It’s a game where you play soccer by cars after all. But let’s take a look at the basic features.
You have two teams on the pitch, and your goal is to score more times than your opponents do. That’s all there is to this game, but nevertheless, it’s a breathtaking experience from the very beginning.
There are both online and offline modes. In offline, the game offers a season mode, the usual exhibition modes, and training. There you can keep your skills in check to get ready for the real fun — online mode. This is where all the beauty begins, with the option of 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and 4v4 variations and each match lasting 5 minutes, you have a chance to experience unbelievably entertaining encounters full of an adrenaline rush.
This fun-filled five minutes will make you play again and again until you realize you are late for work, forgot to eat, drink and shower. Well, you need to play to understand how much fun it is because words can’t ever convey that accurately.
What makes this game so glorious is that it features a perfect balance of ideas and mechanics that fit together wondrously. The five-minute length of each game feels just about right to jump in, have a great time and want to play one more match when it’s over.
If it was longer, the game might start to feel like a bit of a chore to play, which requires you to think about finding the time to dedicate to just one game. Yet any shorter and it may feel like there isn’t enough time to get into it. So, this five minutes is a magical timeframe which allows you a quick play, or a ton of games one after another.
While there are 1v1 and 2v2 options available, it is 3v3 and 4v4 where the game jumps to life. Then, you can start thinking about how to approach each game, who’s better at defending, who is good at getting goals, and who can go and demolish the other team’s cars. However, at the same time Rocket League is just as fun with everyone just chasing the ball around with no tactics and strategy at all.
Controls — 5/5
The controls are spot on here. They are tight and work as they would in an arcade type racer game, with enjoyable physics as well. If you play using a gamepad, there are the left and right triggers to accelerate and break, and also boost and jump on face buttons.
The jump acts as the vehicle’s way to “kick” the ball. Its usage with the analog stick to control the attack of the ball sometimes leads to spectacular goals, especially if you use the curved walls of the stadium you are playing in.
Replay Value — 5/5
Rocket League is fun to replay anytime. Each game feels different as it hasn’t settled into people who found the way to glitch goals, and the things that worked out in a previous match may flop in the next. It adds to the fun because the game can go any way and nothing is ever guaranteed.
Rocket League costs $19,99 and has some downloadable content that features new awesome cars.

Rocket League is a great example of the smart execution of a simple and absurd idea. It’s so strong and engaging that it doesn’t even need tons of extra features around it. Ripping across the pitch at full speed driving a rocket-powered car to deny a shot on goal is enough to play again and again, even without any meaningful progression.
Rocket League is a goofy, easy to learn and difficult to master racing sports game which needs you to grab a few friends and play a few matches.
